That was what my parents told me when I was younger too. To ensure that my tummy is well covered and not directly exposed to the fan when using it. Not sure if it will lead to gassiness, but I just found this article suggesting that overexposure to electric fan may lead to health problems (http://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/overexposure-electric-fans-can-cause-health-problems/page/0/0). The article reported health problems such as fatigue, feeling thirty and dizzy and affected appetite. I think, in general, regardless it is air conditioning or fan, it is always better to keep baby covered up and away from the direct blast from these units to prevent over exposure to the cold air. Here’s an article on the ideal temperature for the baby’s room: http://sg.theasianparent.com/the-ideal-temperature-for-your-babys-room/
My mom and mom-in-law always gets mad at me whenever I let my baby's shirt up and tell me that she'll get gassy and will be difficult to put to sleep due to tummy ache. I've read an article online and I found out that it is excessive crying which causes babies to gulp air into air digestive system. Somehow, too much exposure to fans or aircon can cause a gassy tummy. So safe to say, avoid to much air exposure for babies.
There are many reasons for a baby to develop gas,the type of food the baby consumes, sucking on a empty bottle can also coz gas..i haven't heard of the above but its better to avoid exposure to aircon or electricfan if it does coz gas.
