Nurse daddy here. dulcolax should not have any major side effects as its not absorbed into your system. It works by softening the stools stuck in your colon as well as stimulating your large intestines to contract. The site of action anywhere above the large intestines is normal. Side effects you may feel are cramping in your lower abdomen mainly because the medication is encouraging your large intestines to move the stools through peristalsis. The time it takes to work depends on how impacted (hardened) your stools are. Seen patients who defecate immediately after administration as well as patients who need it daily and defecate only after 4-5 days of daily administration.
