There are charts from the WHO which are found on the Indian Academy of Pediatrics website. These charts can help you determine whether your child is growing at a normal rate. Below are the links: WHO Length/Height, Weight and Head Circumference Chart for Girls 0-5 Years: http://iapindia.org/iap-page.php?file=files/IAP_WHO%20HT_WT_HD%200-5%20Girls.pdf WHO Length/Height, Weight and Head Circumference Chart for Boys 0-5 Years: http://iapindia.org/iap-page.php?file=files/IAP_WHO%20HT_WT_HD%200-5%20Boys.pdf You can download the charts here: http://www.iapindia.org/page.php?id=79 If your child is below the 5th percentile on the growth chart, potential causes for growth failure include inadequate caloric intake, genetics (child may have inherited the stature of a parent, both parents, or a relative), endocrine disorders (hormone problem), chronic disease, and Turner Syndrome. Being underweight or having a BMI of less than 18.5) prior to pregnancy and poor maternal nutrition during pregnancy have also been found to affect children’s growth after birth, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Children come in different shapes and sizes, and so you shouldn’t worry whether yours isn’t as tall or doesn’t weigh as much as the others. What’s more important to take note of is whether your child is continuing to grow at a regular pace. If you notice that your child’s growth rate has slowed down, then see your doctor, who will then track your child’s height and weight measurements over time and spot any inconsistencies that need to be addressed. If a disease has been determined, then certain treatments can be administered to help increase height. Growth problems due to endocrine disorders may be treated with thyroid replacement pills, while growth hormone injections may be used to treat kids with Turner Syndrome. If the growth failure is due to poor nutrition, then best to see a nutritionist for a proper meal plan for your child. Hi Preeti, There can be several reasons for lower growth rate, amongst which heredity may be one. I would suggest that make him eat properly: proper proportions at proper time. You may want to arrange for good quality cow milk instead of packaged milk and feed him about 250 ml twice daily. Apart from this, give him one portion of rice and one small potato everyday in lunch and dinner alongwith other vegetables. Feed him different types of legumes cooked in different styles so that he is interested to eat them. If you are non-vegetarian, make sure to give him fish/chicken/eggs each day and twice a day. If you are vegetarian, give him lots of soyabean cooked deliciously, give paneer and tofu, corns and spinach. Development is mostly about nutrition, so make sure your baby eats really really well. And if he remains lean even after eating well, rest assured he has a good metabolism and that is not something to be concerned about. If he is not interested to eat anything, get a bottle of enzymes prescribed by your doctor. Hope that helps.

Hi Preeti, Do not worry at all as long as your kid is eating and is active enough. He is just 2 and may not be matching the parameters that he should be according to his age but some kids are late bloomers and they catch with their height late. As far as weight is concerned if he is marginally behind his ideal weight do not worry. But if he is so weak and frail that doctor poses this as a matter of concern then follow your PD'S advice. Else what I believe is that if the baby feels hungry, eats well and is active there is no need to worry. But if this is worrying you consult his PD he may advice you some syrup that can boost his hunger.

Every child is different, so there's not really anything to worry about! As long as your child is happy and active, you shouldn't be too worried :) Also, just to let you know that Pediasure is a meal replacement for children who have medical conditions (eg. unable to eat solids, malnutritioned etc). It is loaded with a lot of sugar and hence a lot sweeter than most formula out there - so picky eaters who take it usually end up being addicted to it and become even more picky so ... Try not to get it unless there's a serious medical condition and the doctor prescribed it!

some babies grow at a lower pace than others, but as long as your baby is energetic and does not have any other health related symptoms, i think you should not worry too much. make sure you keep giving him healthy and nutritious foods on a daily basis. some foods that help in increasing weight are raagi, daliya, bananas, eggs, chicken, green leafy vegetables, nuts, fish, rice and such. also, let your baby have lots of citrus fruits and expose him to fresh air and sunlight each day.

Hi Firstly take care of nutrition. Plan meals for him according to the the calories and nutritional content of the food. Meet your PD and see what he has to say. Ask him about supplements that you give your baby.
