Super Mum
Hi dear, you’re going through a lot. I know you need comfort, but I’m going to list the practical steps first ok? 1. Give him a good tight swaddle. He’s scared, freaked out to be in this world. Everything is unfamiliar and scary, unlike in your womb. If you’re unable to wrap him well, buy a velcro/zip swaddle. They’re lifesavers! 2. Not every cry is about being hungry. If you’ve checked the diaper and fed him enough, he may just be lonely or scared. Cuddle him, rock him a little, talk to him. Many newborns hate the bed, because they feel exposed and vulnerable. The swaddle helps. Patting firmly with your hand cupped helps. 3. Get nipple cream asap. Lanolin ointment works wonders. You need to apply it just before and just after feeding. Some people use a nipple shield, but some mummies have reported nipple confusion and breast rejection later on. I stuck to using the ointment. If you’re avoiding feeding with the breast because of nipple cracks and bleeding, don’t leave the breast full. Pump out the milk every 3 hours. A good pump should not hurt your nipples (it should pump the areolar region). The cracks, if you apply the ointment and give it a chance to heal, should heal within 1-2 days, ie. The unbearable pain should subside enough for you to latch. Also, see a lactation consultant. Baby’s latch is probably still wrong and that’s why it’s so painful. A good latch should not cause you pain throughout the whole breastfeeding session. If you can’t find the time to, go to youtube or breastfeeding websites to see how to get baby to latch better. Hope some of the things mentioned are helpful to you, and that things get better soon!
