Panadol is probably the safest, as long as you are not allergic to Paracetamol. The other group of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are not advisable. Which scans are recommended for me during the third trimester?

It is important to monitor the growth of the baby and the amniotic fluid around the baby. Your doctor may also send you to check the bloodflow to the baby to ensure the baby is getting enough oxygen supply. If the mum is planning on a vaginal delivery, I would recommend a swap of the vaginal discharge to check for this bacteria called Group B Streptococcus. Nearing delivery, I would do a Cardiotocography (CTG) to check the baby's heartbeat and monitor the contractions.

What is the placenta and what does it do?

The placenta is a piece of tissue which is a conduit between the mother and her baby. It transports oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the baby through the umbilical cord. It is also where waste products from the baby get transported out via the umbilical cord to the mother for expulsion.

Why is the position of my placenta important?

It is important for a few reasons. - In a case of a fall or blow on the tummy, it can affect whether the baby is harmed. (If placenta is front of womb, such an incident can cause haemorrhage and is dangerous - If your placenta position is low, you will need a c-section. You will also have a higher risk of haemorrhage, so any bleeding can be dangerous for both you and your baby.

What complications can happen in case of placenta praevia?

Placenta Praevia is a condition where the placenta covers the cervix. You cannot have a vaginal delivery and are at high risk of haemorrhage . If you have haemorrhage, you need to see a doctor immediately because the bleeding can be torrential and potentially fatal as well.

What can I do to help myself if I have a low-lying placenta?

There is no specific treatment for and most women with it will have the problem resolved by the third trimester because the placenta moves up with pregnancy. If it is really low, I would advise to avoid vaginal intercourse, head to the nearest A&E if there is any bleeding, more scans nearing the delivery date to check if the placenta has moved up, taking more high-iron foods like meat and dark green vegetables to build up your blood bank.

What causes low amniotic fluid?

Various factors can contribute to low amniotic fluid in pregnancy, including: - Leakage of amniotic fluid (water bag has broken) - Abnormalities of the baby (e.g. chromosomal, infections and problems with the baby's urinary system such as failure of the kidneys and bladder to develop) - Certain drugs ingested by the mother such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) - Placenta insufficiency, where insufficient nutrients and oxygen are being passed on to the baby through the placenta, which results in the baby not producing enough fluid.
