Why is it that my mother in law always tries to prove that newer ways of raising a child is bad? Does our learnings hold no value?

Mil has experience. Can listen as opinions/options but the decision making is done by u and ur husband :) The elderly love to say this 'Last time this and last time that'. Now u can say 'last time policemen wear shorts, now policemen wear pants'... Lolzzz..
