A membrane sweep is a method to bring on labour to avoid going too overdue. It'll be the first step your doctor will offer, before other methods of induction, in order to get your labour going. During an internal examination, your doctor will try to insert a finger into the opening of your cervix and then gently but firmly move his/her finger around. This sweeping movement should separate the membranes of the amniotic sac surrounding your baby from your cervix. This separation releases hormones called prostaglandins, which may kick-start your labour. According to studies, membrane sweep success rate is about 24% in starting a labour. http://www.babycentre.co.uk/what-is-a-membrane-sweep

My gynae did it for me when I was about 39weeks. It is quite similar to vaginal examination, to check on how many cm has been dilated. It was quite painful and uncomfortable for me. My gynae told me it helps to stimulate and kick start the labor (dropping of mucus plug). After the membrane sweep, I did get some brown discharge. However, my real labor only came after 4-5days post membrane sweep.

What’s the success rate of natural birth after membrane sweep? I just did mine this morning and at 39 +4. Dr said my cervix not flavourable and ask me to do more squats and brisk walk. Would that help? Or any other ways to help on dilation etc?

To add on to Idza, a membrane sweep is very, very uncomfortable for the mummy. I squirmed so much when I had mine done and was trying my hardest to relax but it just felt so uncomfortable.

thanks
