Early signs of mastitis may resemble the flu and also cause a fever. The breasts become hot, red and swollen and skin around it becomes red and shiny. You may also experience intense pain while breastfeeding. What to do if you have mastitis? -You can and should continue breastfeeding for sure -Make sure you are relaxed and empty your breasts well; offer the affected breast to your baby first. -Massage while feeding -Apply cold packs to help with the swelling -See a doctor -Lots and lots of rest
