2 month old baby and medication

Went to general practitioner as baby is unwell, having flu and cough. Gp gave medication such as phenexpect and ventolin. After giving medication i was told by a friend not to give as their body cannot take it at this age and go to a paediatrician instead. Anybody have any experience? Baby really cannot take medication prescribed by gp or at this age?
