Thinking of taking fenugreek to increase supply, but I've read that it can cause foremilk-hindmilk imbalance. Is it advisable to take it if I'm still doing a combination of direct latch and pumping?
Foremilk-hindmilk imbalance is related to oversupply and usually happens when a mother allows her baby to breastfeed for only a few minutes on each side. This results in her baby filling up exclusively on foremilk, which provides an oversupply of lactose. Therefore, it is important that the mother allows her baby to drink from one breast until it "seems", before offering the other breast (this helps ensure that the baby is getting ample amount of foremilk and hindmilk). The effectiveness of taking fenugreek as a milk booster is different for every mother. I have not heard from others who experienced foremilk-hindmilk imbalance from taking it. But I suspect it could happen if it is effective which in turn lead to oversupply for the mother. If you still see a need to increase your supply in addition to direct latching and pumping, you could give it a try. In case it did lead to foremilk-hindmilk imbalance, you can refer to this article on some tips on how to prevent or stop a formilk-hindmilk imbalance (covered in the middle section of this article): http://www.breastfeeding-problems.com/foremilk-hindmilk-imbalance.html
