Studies have shown that smoking does lower milk production. It also causes Interference with milk let-down and causes the production of lower levels of prolactin, a hormone needed for milk synthesis to occur. I'd refrain from smoking if baby is involved but if you really cannof, wait as long as possible between smoking and nursing. Studies have shown that it takes 95 minutes for 50% of the nicotine to be eliminated from your body. http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/smoking/
I have read that nicotine, like alcohol, could be freely pass into the breast milk. I have also read that smoking has been linked to early weaning, lowered milk production, and inhibition of the milk ejection ("let-down") reflex, and fussiness (in babies). The general advice would be to avoid smoking if one is breastfeeding. For more information on this topic: http://www.lalecheleague.org/faq/smoking.html

In many cases, you can breastfeed before smoking, drinking or taking the drug or medication, and simply pump and dump until at least three hours after your last substance intake. When in doubt, pump and dump.
