When does ur baby speak his first word
Hi mummies. My bb just came back from his 1yr devepopment check at polyclinic. Doc asked if he has spoke his first word e.g. papa or mama specifically to us. We said no but he babbles & understands. Doc says usually first word at 12 mth. Feeling worried now. I read that boys are more likely to start speaking a little later than girls . May i know to all the boys mummies, when does ur bb said their first word meaningfully? (Not babbling)

My firstborn is a boy and he was quite slow in his speech too despite talking to him alot. He was able to say papa and mama at 11 months but tt was it. No other spoken words but he was able to understand simple instructions like "Throw this in the bin" and he was able to throw into the bin or pick up the remote and he was able to do it without us using any gestures. My private PD wasn't so concerned though but I was the kanchiong one and tried to get him an appt at KKH via polyclinic. Only managed to get a speech specialist at 18 months and by then he has progressed but not as much as compared to his peers. By then I also put him in half day childcare but still not much improvement. He was unfortunately absent alot due to always being sick and my mom cldnt bear getting him sick further so she decided to continue caring for him full time. The speech therapy also didnt do much so I stopped aft 5 months. I only see a much faster progress when he got to N1 aft 2 years old. He's a Dec baby so yes his peers are all older and could speak sentences by then. He became very talkative when his baby sister was born just before his 3rd birthday. And now at 4.5 years old he's able to read and write better than most of his peers, according to his teacher. Took me a lot of practice every day with him, lots of reading and pretend play too. Generally boys need more time than girls, from what I observed as an educator myself. For my girl at 15 months, she is alr able to speak in phrases and simple sentences like 'I want this'. A far cry from what her brother could at the same age but it cld also attribute to her starting sch age. I sent her to infantcare since 6 months old so she communicates much better.
Read moreHello! My baby boy just turned one, he started saying papa mama at around 10mo - but I used to an early childhood educator so I've been very intentional and spend a lot of time with him. Currently he is able to recognise about 20 words by pointing, and able to say papa, mama, bear and duck (favourite animal) 🤣 These are my tips on getting him to speak!! 1. Talk to your baby a lot!! And I mean A LOT and about anything! I find the easiest way is to just talk through whatever you are doing! So I say things like "let's go to the kitchen and open the fridge! Oh my goodness, can you see what's in the fridge? Let's see what ingredients mama can use today! Can you tell mama if you want blueberries or yogurt? You want yogurt? Ok! Mama will take the yogurt. Let's put the yogurt in a bowl! Let's count how many scoops! Mama put one, two, three! Ok mama is going to close the lid" etcetc haha you get the point! 2. Reinforce and validate whenever they get pointing or babbling right! When you ask "where's mama" and he gets it right, clap and make a big deal every single time. Eventually he just kind of picked up the words 🙏 all the best mama and remember that every child develops at their pace 🌟
Read moreMine also boy. Dont know why they always emphasize on “mama papa” to be the first words. Mine only called us at 15 months. Now 20 months non stop. He started talking 1-3 words around 10-11 months or so. Like ball, bubble. He only actively speak words at 15 months on suddenly absorb very fast and can say alot of words. Now 20 months can tell us what he wants, like milk, snack, carrot, etc. sometimes can say i want to do it, dont want, stop etc. i can only advise to just keep talking to them non stop and read books. Not those alot of words, more to interactive of few words. Just describe whats in the picture.
