Herd Immunity

Madami ka ba kilala na may sakit? Influenza, Measles outbreak, Polio outbreak, Diphtheria and now we are in this Pandemic. We were declared polio free 2000 and yet here we are after 19 years it re-emerged. What’s happening? Thus means pwede bumalik talaga especially if konti na lang ang nagpapa vaccine. Do you know that when you vaccinate your kids, you protect other people too? Yes you do! You protect the elderly and even newborns who has no immunization yet or can’t get one. Herd immunity means not everyone in a community needs to be immune to prevent spread of disease. If a high enough proportion of individuals in a population are immune, the majority will protect the few susceptible people because the pathogen is less likely to find a susceptible person. Herd immunity protects everyone, but it is especially important for those who can’t get vaccinated – for example, those with life-threatening allergies to any part of the influenza vaccine. When a community has low immunization coverage, the likelihood of an outbreak increases. If a sufficient number of people (herd) are immune, the infection will no longer circulate. Thus is low, chances of “hawa-hawa” Why take chances? Life matters! When it comes to vaccination, remember that by protecting yourself, you are protecting so many others. Getting vaccinated is your responsibility to yourself, to others and to your community and mankind.
