Is it okay to have a glass of wine when you're breastfeeding?

Yes, it's okay to drink wine when you're breastfeeding, only if you take precautions. While the total amount of alcohol transferred into your bloodstream and your breastmilk is relatively low, it can still affect your baby's immature liver. Your baby cannot process alcohol as well as you can. So the best way to enjoy a glass of wine while not letting that affect your little one is to pump before you indulge yourself. And dump out two consecutive feeds so that the alcohol is flushed out of your system. Ideally, you should avoid alcohol till your baby is six months minimum, but if you want to take an occasional sip remember to get it out of your body. Another thing to do is to feed your baby formula. Now, about the quantity: ideally you should avoid alcohol during breastfeeding. But having a glass over a period of a week or two is fine, as long as you flush it out before feeds. If your baby already sleeps through the night, you have the occasional drink in the evening. Plus, alcohol intoxicates you, making it difficult for you to care for your baby and neither can you sleep next to a baby in an inebriated state. So its best to avoid.
