pump milk
Every how many hour should I pump once? How long do I have to pump ?
If you’re trying to build up a supply, then pumping more frequently + power pumping will help. If you’re also latching directly, then aim to pump between feeds. During the day time, about every 3 hrs. At night, sleep is also important, so you can focus on latching on demand at night and if you’re engorged, then pump. There are mummies who wake up to both latch and pump, then wash the pump, etc. That’s great if you have help, but it’s also very tiring, and you forgo sleep, which is also equally important. Don’t let it stress you out. Stress also drops your supply. Remember to drink loads of water and eat well too:) and there’s no harm/shame in topping up with formula if your supply’s not adequate. Enjoy your breastfeeding journey:) If you’re exclusively pumping, then every 2-3 hrs during the day, and every 4-5 hrs at night (or when you’re engorged) is fine. As for duration of pumping, it depends on your supply. For power pumping, try pumping for 10min, resting for 5 min, and repeating that cycle again. Once your supply is established, pump till you’ve emptied the breasts. I find that pumping one side at a time (and using a collection cup on the other) yields more, and massaging + pushing the outer part of the breast towards the pump (sequentially, like going round the clock) helps drain the breast well and also yields more milk.
