As the tooth is erupting from the gums, the guns would be sore and red and sometimes would bleed. Thus, it would hurt the child should there be pressure on the gums. To help soothen his swollen gums, a frozen teething ring can be introduced as it is very good for numbing the pain of teething and satisfying baby's need to chew and rub his gums. Please avoid the type of ring with stuff floating inside because a vigorously chewing infant might gnaw through and swallow or choke on the little objects. Alternatively, offer something as simple as a wet washcloth that your baby can chew on will provide relief on his/her gums.

It's the gums that hurt, not the tooth. Gums are swollen as new tooth comes oit that's why it is painful and sensitive when touched. We do give gel and sometimes cold teether to help ease the pain.
