Bumpers for newborn cots - heard we should avoid it. What's the deal? Use it or chuck it in storage till baby is older?

I bought bumper cots for my babycot but ended up taking them off the very first night because I wasn't able to see my baby (the cot was right next to my bed). And yes, like the other mummies mentioned, having a bumper cot increases the risk of SIDS in the case that the baby flips during sleep. You're not able to see him, and the baby wouldn't be able to move away by himself yet. Bumper cots are thick and wouldn't allow for breathing. I suggest for bumper cots only when the baby is older, and able to flip on his own.
