Sleeping Schedule

Hi my boy is 45 days old. Should he have a sleeping schedule?

Super Mum

He may not have a fixed sleeping schedule yet, but his awake intervals should be about 1 hour now during the day. He should learn the difference between day and night, so make sure everything’s bright and lively during the day, and dark and quiet at night for him to learn. During the day, put him to sleep 1 hour after waking up (to prevent overtiredness) so you’ll need to finish feeding/tummy time, etc during that time. You can also start establishing bedtime cues/routines and do it consistently before each nap and bedtime.

Napping for 2 hrs at a time is fine, but he probably hasn’t mastered day-night differentiation yet, so bring him out into sunlit areas where possible. As for night, he might be feeling insecure, especially since the whole house is quieter. A tight swaddle’s pretty useful at this stage. Some babies do need to be trained to sleep during the night (both my kids needed that).. so it’ll take some time and patience. The other thing you can start doing is letting your baby start learning to self soothe. He starts calling for you? Give him a few minutes to be by himself before you go to him. You can start with 3 minutes, then extend it to 5 minutes. As baby learns to self soothe, that also helps train baby to fall back asleep at night if they wake up but actually don’t need a feed/diaper change

No you don’t need a sleeping schedule
