Poo Issue

Anybody experienced their child clenching their buttcheeks/butthole when they feel the urge to poo? Ive read that it could be due to a painful poo before hence they feel scared but anybody have methods to overcome this? Its driving me up the wall because he seems to be in pain while is witholding it. He will cry and ask me to carry him.
