Anybody did the Oscar test? Is it necessary? What is the process like? #1stimemom #firstbaby

My first baby was a down syndrome and I did an Oscar test during first trimester which the result turned out to be 1 in 10. Many people and specialists commented that the possibility of having a Down Syndrome baby is higher when the mother is older. But when I had mine, I was only 18 years old. I did another test which was the amniocentesis and had a confirmed diagnosis of down syndrome baby at 20 weeks. For me, it was necessary to get it tested. It was still a traumatic experience for me as it was a loss I couldn't comprehend then I finally got the courage to try for a baby this year after 10 years. the process for Oscar is do a detailed ultrasound to check for the structure of baby that also include the main markers such as nuchal translucency and nasal bone followed by a blood test. but oscar can't tell you the gender of baby as compared to NIPT and the accuracy is only 90%. If not wrong, NIPT or Harmony is 99% accuracy.

I did both FTS or OSCAR in the first trimester-11 weeks+, turns out results was high risk 1:13 for Down syndrome . I went on with NIPT and fetal heart scan and NT scan again at week 15, and detailed scan at week 20, results were Low risk for all tests and scans and I’m 37 weeks now. Due soon :) Hence for me it was traumatic FTS/OSCAR cos of all the “possible risk”.. I would rather have gone for NIPT first and detailed scan at week 20 to save me from all the unnecessary worries.

Post reply to this post to help other mummies: my baby is 6 months now and he’s a perfect child growing up and hitting his milestones as a happy baby!

I chose OSCAR over NIPT - just a thorough ultrasound to check for structural abnormalities like organ development and also a simple blood test for genetic defects. It's more to mentally prepare you and is optional

Super Mum

I think you take an oscar test only if you are an older parent or if you have something to be concern about. Otherwise there is no need to.

ask urself, if the result turns out to be yes or no, will u keep the baby? If u will keep the baby, i suggest dont need to do..

i did not do test as we knew regardless we will keep the baby. only did the 20 weeks detailed scan

hmm not sure but detailed scan can see most of the major organs n the limbs etc. only the lung is not fully developed yet. so it does give a good idea but best to ask doc

it's optional. if u feel u need the peace of mind, do it :)
