When your baby's cross-eyed, is there a way to fix this condition?

My sister had lazy eye when she was a baby and was treated by covering the stronger eye for a period of time every day. After that she was also prescribed glasses to help her eye focus. But my parents tried to limit her use of the glasses and continued with the eye patch for a longer period instead.
