Off the top of my head, vitamins and nutrients like folic acid, iron, iodine, and calcium are especially important for pregnancy. Folic acid helps prevent neural tube birth defects, which affect the brain and spinal cord. Calcium helps a pregnant woman from losing her own bone density as the baby uses calcium for its own bone growth. Iodine is important for a woman’s healthy thyroid function as a deficiency in iodine can cause stunted physical growth, severe mental disability, and deafness. A lack of iodine can lead to miscarriage and stillbirth. And iron is useful for both the mother and baby; it helps carry oxygen in the bloodsteam.
