My friend, who works in the early childhood, tells me that a leap is a developmental growth (mental and emotional) while a growth spurt is related to physical growth. But they share one thing in common -- baby will get super cranky during both stages.

Growth spurts are physical spurts, leaps are mental ‘spurts’.
