Is it ok to just ask for cash instead of toys, clothes, etc as birthday presents?

If you are close to the person or if the other party asked specifically for your preference, I don't see why not. My friends and I are quite practical and would sometimes simply state that we are giving cash (in the form of ang baos) so that the money could be put into good use. However, I have friends who are very thoughtful and prefer to buy presents they think that others would want (and will never buy on their own). So, I think if your friends are asking what to give, it is ok to say that you will prefer cash. Or perhaps vouchers (like capitaland mall, takashimaya, or even vouchers from supermarkets) are also good if your friends are not inclined to "just give cash". :)

If your friends tell you that they're not sure of what to get, you could suggest to them that cash or gift vouchers would be a better gift as you could use it for your baby's future or to get necessities for your baby yourself. Most of the time, they'd be willing to do so as they may be afraid of getting gifts that you or your baby may not like.

If they have brought stuff already, then it's just polite to accept them. But if they're the type of people who asks you what you want to receive, then asking for cash or giftchecks instead is perfectly fine. I know many people who actually prefer to give cash instead of a gift that the recipient may or may not enjoy or use

I myself would prefer cash or vouchers over gifts. I don't want to end up receiving something I have already bought but is too embarrassed to decline. However it also brings down to a point whether the person is close to you or not.

Why not? I will always tell my friends to give angbao instead so we can buy whatever that is needed based on our preference in terms of brands/specifications.. More practical. Your friends/relatives will understand!

Hi Hui! Thanks for this. Our baby has lots of toys and clothes in our house. The next reason why I love to ask my friends for cash as birthday present is, is to increase my baby's bank account for her future. :)

for me, i will tell my family members.. for friends, unless they mention to me they dont know what to get for me and ask me what i need.. i will tell them politely that i would prefer cash or vouchers

Yes it's okay. It will save your family and friends the headache of what to get you and your family. I know I would prefer getting cash gifts or gift cards as opposed to actual gifts.
