Antibodies which are transferred from the mother to baby through the placenta is known as passive immunity. Passive immunity will taper off after a few weeks or months but if the baby is breastfed, the baby will receive antibodies in breastmilk which will boost their immunity. http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/939.aspx?CategoryID=62
