Qn about Car Seats

Hi! FTM here... Need some advice on whether or not to buy car seat, and if so what type... I'm super close to my due date already and still not sure if I should get infant car seat as a I heard bb outgrows it fast. We don't have our own car, so I'm not sure if getting those "grow with your child" car seats is practical. That said, understand we need car seat to transport around in phv/ cars. Just wondering what are your experiences... or would renting a car seat be more practical? Heard some people mention they carry baby in carrier which we have, but not sure if safe for newborn. Especially first trip back home from hospital... Please advise thank you!
