my lo is 2 years old now. but seems like they don't really understand too. so I've changed my approach during certain situations that I needed to be firm. like frowning expressions and firmer tone to address to situation. which I then feel that they might understand by observing our facial expressions? honestly don't have the perfect answer for you but hope that helps!
