Did you know that flu can affect your unborn child? Pregnant women, like me are at high risk of influenza complications. A pregnant woman goes through many changes during pregnancy. Most of them wonderful but some leaving you and your baby more vulnerable to severe flu and its complications.
Flu in pregnancy can have significant consequences for you and your infant, affecting cardiovascular, respiratory and including immune system. Flu complications can cause hypertension, fetal abnormality, lower birth weight and death.
Flu prevention is the best protection. If you're protected against flu while pregnant, you also protect your baby against it during the first several months after birth, when they're too young to get protected. WHO recommends that pregnant women be given the highest priority for flu prevention at any stage of pregnancy due to high risk of severe influenza.
