How do they count age of pregnancy?

Anybody experienced having a child who’s age doesnt tally with your first day of last menses? My ‘last menses’ was my miscarriage on 6 January. Now I found out from the digital pregnancy kit that I am pregnant stating that the conception age is 3weeks. So how old is the baby inside and when should I check with ultrasound?
