High blood pressure during pregnancy poses various risks to the mother and baby. If it is not controlled, the mother can have a fit, stroke or heart attack at any point in time during the pregnancy, which may lead to death. If the mother suffers any severe complications, the baby's life would be at risk too. In some cases, the baby may need to be delivered prematurely. Babies can be affected by prematurity.

It can be due to many reasons. The main thing to keep a lookout for is if the pain goes away, signs of labour or bleeding, uterine contraction cramps, diarrhoea and food poisoning. Overexercising of the core muscles could also be a reason. If you're unsure, see your gynae for further assessment.

Down’s Syndrome can now be screened before 14 weeks pregnancy. This consist of an ultrasound of the baby’s neck and nose as well as a blood test from the mother.
