I want to ensure my child is prepared to enter Primary 1, what can I do to make sure of it? It starts with a good pre-school program such as the Reggio Emilia.There focus of the program is on social collaboration, where each child is an equal participant, having their thoughts and questions valued. What kind of enrichment class is suitable for K2 child who would be promoted to P1 next year? How do we prepare them for primary school and what is expected from them?

How to ensure that they enjoy the process?

I made sure that my daughter was participating in the process - school uniform, books, stationery, school bag, shoes. It also helped to get her familiar with a primary school environment. This is where orientation plays a big role! Get them used to: - Buying food and receiving change on their own - Making their clothes neat after going to the bathroom - Wash hands before/ after eating and drying them - Returning plates - Eating at a reasonable pace without rushing ot taking too slow

What life skills can my child develop with this course and how will these skills be implemented?

One of the key principles of the Reggio approach is the fact that children have rights when it comes to their learning. The child is put at the centre and is treated as a ‘knowledge bearer’. By valuing children in this way educators put more emphasis on really listening to the children. Educators are expected to listen and give ample time and space to children to express themselves. Children in Reggio settings are active constructors of knowledge, and they are encouraged to be ‘researchers’. Most of the educational experiences at Reggio take the form of projects, where children have opportunities to actively participate, explore, and question things. There is also a very strong emphasis on the social development of children as part of a community and their relationships to other children, their families and teachers.

How do you instil independence and a growth mindset within the child with this course?

Carol Dweck coined the phrase "growth mindset" which refers to a disposition whereby one believes that traits such as talent or intelligence are not fixed but malleable and capable of changing. Her work has shown that students with fixed mindsets around intelligence tend to focus more and achievement goals--especially goals they know they can meet--than on learning. They are more defensive or defeatist when encountering failure because it they see it as a judgement on the whole of who they are. Finally, fixed mindset students are especially susceptible to drops in self-esteem and intrinsic motivation. Growth mindsets around intelligence, on the other hand, lead students to focus more on learning, especially in the face of difficulty, because they see learning as a way to grow. This leads students to develop mastery which in turn promotes higher self-esteem, intrinsic motivation, and learning. Fortunately, there are powerful--and sometimes surprisingly subtle--interventions that can help people who have a fixed mindset develop a growth mindset. And thats what the reggio emilia philosophy does - it aims to instil a growth mindset in both kids and teachers.

How does this program differ from other prep school programs ?

Two of the prominent features that the Reggio-Emilia school philosophy emphasizes are the natural environment and the project approach. The project approach places the student, rather than the teacher, at the center of the learning process. It views students as co-creators of their education rather than empty vessels to be filled with the right information. With the project approach, instead of teaching from a predetermined lesson plan, teachers engage with the children in their play to better understand their interests. When a question or interest arises from the children, the teacher helps students explore the topic more deeply by asking questions and by providing relevant materials and activities. Using natural materials to construct the learning environment is another key aspect to Reggio-Emilia. Instead of coloring in a picture of a tree, children might go on a nature walk to collect sticks and leaves, then return to the classroom and make a tree collage by gluing what they've collected onto construction paper. Use of the natural environment extends beyond just materials and overlaps with the project approach. Members of the community with expertise in an aspect of a project are often invited to the school to share their knowledge with the children. The Reggio-Emilia philosophy aims to empower and engage each child in her/his own learning process. I believe that students learn and retain more when they have a personal investment and passion for the material. I believe the strategies used by Reggio-Emilia can very effectively foster these attitudes toward learning, and I believe that such attitudes increase the ability of a child to master school-readiness skills.

How do you discipline children within this course structure?

The reggio emillio philosophy focuses on respect for others and/or safety as the reasons for standards of behavior. They try to sow the seeds of internal discipline. The teachers would work with the parents if there were any huge issues.

The Reggio Emilia course is focused on project based assignments how will this ready my son for Primary school where the lessons are separated by periods ?

To me, project based assignments instill a sense of independence as well as discipline because projects are often done in the long run, sometimes individually, sometimes in a group. Either way, it's not the typical "spoon-feeding" or rigourous daily assessment mode of education. While the Reggio Emilia style of education will not necessarily apply directly to primary school curriculum, traits like discipline, independence as well as curiosity can be honed eventually -- which will come in useful when your child is older and in higher levels of education as well as in their future jobs.
