character dress up
my lo is having character dress up in school the next week. looking forward to some cool ideas.
PTA went wrong. 4 year old judged heavily on academics while nothing is being taught
My daughter is 4 and goes to a "inquiry based learning" preschool. Needless to say she doesn't come home with any homework. Neither do the parents get any emails or suggestions about what to work at home with the child. There are no textbooks either. I don't have a problem with it because I consider this is the age to play and that's how it is. Their topics are about "Recycling" and "Baby growth in womb". (with photos of many stages of baby growing in the womb) and showing ultrasound photos of the babies. I considered all this to be part of the modern liberal approach to teaching. However the PTA didn't go like that There were a lot of COMPLAINTS about How she didn't know to find the number 25 from blocks How she didn't read or learn to read words How she doesn't recognize January from July. All this without even a single instance of teaching A to Z. Or phonics. There is no mention of phonics anywhere in the curriculum. They are not asking parents to teach them anything. Year round we get emails every week. No materials are given to parents. Nothing. There are kids who the parents work with at home , presuming using their own materials, or who go to enrichment centers like kumon, and who do a good work in school. But is this really how it should be? They also showcase children's skills (which they didn't gain from school) in their newsletters. Like how a kid is writing till 50. (They aren't teaching or even attempting to teach any of this) Its like there are exams, but nothing is being taught. Is this normal? I am very new to Singapore and this is also my first child. After all of this, I was sent home saying, I better hurry up because Singapore has an aggressive education system. (While they are doing ABSOLUTELY nothing about it) I spoke to some other parents. Some of them who got negative feedback, just liked to believe that their kid is just backward and the other kids are "brilliant" These kids are 4 years old, and these kind of notions about the kids will scar them for life. And this is supposed to be a holistic teaching place which charges me 2000$ per month. Please help. Is this normal?
International School Options
I know there have been a lot of discussions, but after choosing the "wrong" preschool for my daughter I would like to chose an international school which is academic enough, while not being pushy. Encourages and understands kids well. Please parents whose kids are currently going to schools like these, if you could reply it would be great.
Tit for Tat
Has anyone else hit their child after they hit you? Okay - hear me out. Sometimes I feel staying calm and reasoning with them doesn't work. So once in a while when my toddler hits me, I tap her back - real gently but enough to make her think I hit her that it makes her cry. It's not painful at all, honestly. I just want to show her that hitting is not nice and she wouldn't want it to be done to her. Like this morning, she was pulling her big sister's hair real hard and wouldn't let go even after I calmly told her to let go, which escalated to me raising my voice at her to let go. So I took one of her pigtails and pulled it too. That worked instantly. Raising my threenager is such a challenge to my patience! My eldest wasn't like this at all when she turned three.
how to drop a nap
Toddler 3 years old. How to drop from 2 Naps to 1 without any drama?
cosleeping with toddler who kicks all night
I Co sleep once a week with my toddler who basically ensures I don’t sleep cause she kicks us all night Long. She tosses and turns while soundly asleep. I am a massively light sleeper and with every turn, grunt or kick I wake up. It also takes me forever to go back to sleep. Is there any solution to this? The rest of the 6 nights she sleeps in her own room, so this is basically her once a week treat. And she won’t sleep on a separate bed for that one night a week.

Free Play Learning in Pre-Schools
Hi Mummies and Daddies, do you all think that the learning concept in a pre-school should be thematic per semester? E.g Fruits, Animals, Transport etc. Usually schools do have themes each semester. But what if the school has this concept where by they follow the child's interest? no theme. How can the school ensure that each child is interested? Opinions please :)
Having Nightmare
Hi Daddies & Mummies, My son (27 months in PG now) had nightmare recently. On Monday, it was terrible that I had to bring him to the temple & prayed. Thereafter, his nighmare stopped. However, yesterday & today, he cried & refused to enter the CCC once we reached. Instead we loitered around till he was satisfied to enter the CCC (that was yesterday). For today, he didn't even want to enter the CCC & I had to drag him in. Only then his Chinese form teacher managed to pacify & settled him down. May I know what is the main reason? Was he frightened by the new kids onboard or something else? Thank you!
