Don't know if their is a direct correlation between weight gain and a teen girl's first period but reckon it has to do with puberty in general. During puberty, girls gain weight all over the body and then more around breast, hip and thighs. They will appear as if they have put on a substantial amount of weight before their curves develop. Also, due to hormonal changes, teens in general will eat and sleep more to keep up with the major changes in their bodies. This could also account for the weight gain. Moreover, as we all know, when we get our period, we tend to be more bloated and again, this could also account for the whole "putting on weight" situation.

Once the period starts, the body starts to grow and develop curves . There will also be increase in height. On an average, girls grow about 8 cm a year. So yes, because of all these factors, there will be a substantial amount of weight gain.
