how safe is a UV sterilizer?

I've been using a steam sterilizer and thinking of switching over to UV for convenience sake. However my family members are quite sceptical and warned me about the effects of how UV causes cancer/ degrades the plastic bottles and worried that it may affect baby's health in the long run. Anyone has credible/scholar articles to support the safe use of UV sterilizer? Hope to convince them that it is safe for baby. Thanks :)
