I really want to get a pet dog for my family and think it's a great way to teach kids about responsibility and love. But my sons are afraid of them. How can I help overcome their fear? They are 11 and 12.

I think you should just buy a puppy without telling your kids haha.
NOBODY can resist an adorable face which screams "pet me". As puppies are young, timid and generally shy when you first get it, I think your kids will be less afraid and they'll want to care more for the it. As time goes by, I think their fear of dogs will probably fade away.
