Do you think it is necessary for a pri school kid to own a handphone?

I personally needed a phone when I was in primary school as I started going to/from school by myself at the age of 8, on public transport. So it was definitely a good thing. Plus, it made me feel very safe knowing that I had a way of contacting somebody and thus not to be left stranded.
