The science behind children wearing multifocal contact lenses is to mimic the same effects of Orthokeratology on the cornea and how it places the light in front of the peripheral retina to prevent myopia from progressing. There is evidence to show that this method does slow down the progression of myopia although it may not be as effective as orthok itself. Another point to note is the position of such lenses in the eye, multifocal contact lenses have varying degree of power within the lens and the lens will move in the eye to facilitate tear exchange. This might affect the visual outcome intermittently. That said, yes they can and proper lens care instructions will need to be adhered to.
