Even though every child develops at different rates, there is usually a range for hitting developmental milestones that is considered normal. The early signs of autism is characterized by the lack of normal behaviour. For example, a baby may not respond to cuddling, reach out to be picked up or look at his/her mother when being fed. If a parent observe that his/her child is not meeting the milestones within the stipulated timeframe, it is best to speak to their doctor. There are some early signs of autism in babies and toddlers and here are some for your reference: - No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter - No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions by nine months - No babbling by 12 months - No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months - No words by 16 months - No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months Also, if there is any regression of any kind (at any age), such as a loss of speech, babbling, gestures or social skills, the parents should bring the child to the doctor for a proper consultation.
