Pregnant women should avoid feta cheese as it may contain the listeria bacteria. There is both the pasteurized and un-pasteurized versions availabe but even if it is pasteurized, there is still a chance of contamination if it is made in a factory with unhygenic conditions.
New mums should include feta cheese in their diet becasue of their health benefits. It is good for bone health, prevents cancer, boosts the immune system, is good for gut health and helps reduce migranes. That said, have it in moderation as it is high in sodium, fat and cholesterol. Sprinkle feta cheese on salads, pizzas and pastas.
Whilst pregnant mums should avoid feta cheese, breastfeeding mums are okay to go ahead and eat it. They contain many health benefits for a breastfeeding mum but eat it in moderation as it is also high in sodium, fat and cholesterol.
It is not advisable to give your baby feta cheese if they are less than 1 year old. This is because it can contain the bacteria listeria. Wait till after their first birthday and then only give them pasteurized feta cheese.
